Taking Care of Yourself in Stressful Times

As we are all aware, we are living in stressful times. Everyday I can turn on the news and know that people are handling stress in harmful ways. Shootings in the workplace, suicide, drug abuse, divorce, depression, are all examples of inappropriate ways in dealing with everyday stresses. More than ever we all need to take care of ourselves and correct our negative thinking patterns to be positive.

So what can you do to take care of yourself? First of all recognize and be aware of what stresses you. Be aware of how you are feeling before it gets out of control. Some people may experience shallow breathing, headaches, not sleeping, no appetite etc. These are warning signs to us and let us know when things are not quite right. Turn your thinking to more positive thoughts and encourage yourself by using positive self-talk. Telling yourself that you can get through the tough time. Turn problems into challenges and know when something is not in your control.

Next, remember what you are thankful for. Write in a journal. Send a note to a friend or family member letting them know how much you appreciate them. Being grateful can help us focus on what we have and take the focus off the negatives. It can always be worse.

Stop and smell the flowers!! Studies have shown that smelling something pleasant such as flowers can help the brain calm down. Spend time outdoors or go to your local nursery and purchase some flowers. Pick up fresh cut flowers from the market and lift your spirits with some beauty and sweet fragrance to calm your soul.

Listen to music and dance around the room. This may sound crazy but listening to music and dancing can benefit you in a couple of ways. Music in itself can help you get your focus off your negative thoughts and dancing is effective because of the movement involved give you some exercise which is also beneficial in managing your stress.

Exercise, exercise, exercise!!!! Yes we all know that we need to exercise and this is the number one stress management technique. Not only is exercise good for your physical body it is also good for you mentally. Exercise can help us get the negative energy out in a positive way. It can help clear our head so we can think more clearly in everyday life. So when stress comes our way our body and mind are more prepared to deal with it. Try getting 30 minutes of exercise a day. Take a walk, take an exercise class, park your car farther away and walk, ride your bike, etc. You will notice the difference in how you feel.

Find out what works best for you and try some of these helpful techniques. You will be better equipped in handling your stress and you will be healthier. Stress is inevitable but the way we can deal with it can make all of the difference. It could literally mean life of death.
